Clock ticking on pesticide disposal scheme

GROWERS are being urged to make the most of a pesticide disposal scheme before it ends next month.

The Project SOE (Security in the Operational Environment) scheme allows farmers to dispose safely of unwanted chemicals for a £20 all-in charge, including products no longer approved for use in the UK.

“It is all too easy for farms to end up with obsolete stock, often in small quantities and part-used packets at the back of the chemical store,” said Patrick Goldsworthy, who manages the Voluntary Initiative.

“This latest disposal scheme is brilliant value. It is a great opportunity for farmers and other pesticide users to have a once and for all clear out of obsolete, illegal or unwanted pesticides from stores.”

The  scheme already had several thousand registrations, so it was important that farmers and growers signed up as soon as possible, said Mr Goldsworth. It ends on 14 March.
