‘Now’ is the time for Broadway Star
RISING temperatures mean the time is right for East Anglian growers to tackle weeds in winter wheat, advises crop protection specialists Dow AgroSciences.
“As soil temperatures finally start to reach 8C, winter wheat will start to grow more vigorously but so will the weeds,” says Dow’s technical expert Stuart Jackson. “I know growers are anxious to get on with spraying.”
An application of Broadway Star (pyroxsulam and florasulam) would help to make up for lost time as it provided an all-round spring clean-up for winter wheat, said Mr Jackson.
“Not only will it deal with ryegrass, wild oats and soft brome, but also a wide range of broadleaved weeds.” These included cleavers, speedwell, poppy, common chickweed, field pansy, geranium, mayweed and volunteer oilseed rape.
For growers who managed to apply residual treatments last autumn, Broadway Star would help prevent the populations of the key grass weeds building up to create ever bigger headaches.
Many people who used Broadway Star for the first time last year were pleased with the outcome. Farmer David House said: “Having looked quite messy, our wheat had never looked so good. It was brilliant. It controlled wild oats and also cleared up a groundsel infestation.”
