Don’t demonise vegans – get them on side

Vegans could hold the key to the return of sustainable farming systems involving red meat production, farmers were told.

Patrick Holden, founder of the Sustainable Food Trust, made the comments at the East of England Farming Conference on Thursday (1 November).

“I can understand the vegan protest vote – I think a lot of young people in particular are horrified about industrial livestock production,” said Mr Holden.

But the failure to understand the central role of ruminant animals in building soil fertility was proving to be a barrier for a wider return to mixed farming, he added.

“We have to tackle this issue by discussing things with vegans,” Mr Holden told conference delegates at the Peterborough showground.

“We have to convert vegans back to an understanding that it is good to eat red meat from sustainable farming systems – mainly grass fed, of course,” he said.
