Professionals from across the region gathered to examine the issues facing Norfolk family farms on a farm walk organised by rural specialists Savills.

Held on Tuesday, 4 July, the event at Elmham House, North Elmham, was attended by nearly 50 practitioners – including accountants, solicitors, bankers, grain traders, insurers and grant funders as well as farmers.

Michael Mack, food and farming consultant from Savills Norwich, said: “Elmham House provided a perfect illustration for many of the themes currently being tackled by local farmers and we wanted both to share our expertise with fellow professionals.

“The main focus was on the drive to maximise assets during this time of uncertainty.  We discussed diversification and the associated challenges that could limit uptake – in the main this boils down to acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge.”

The group also discussed grassland management and the balance of nature conservation with income generation; arable cropping opportunities; the potential for farm businesses to secure project funding; and marketing strategy in the event of a farm sale.
