Four-wheel steer trailers make light work of header movements

Abrey Agricultural reports increased interest in four-wheel steer trailers made by German manufacturer Ziegler to move combine headers this harvest.

Toby Abrey believes the trailers offer many farmers the chance to invest in larger headers so they can get the advantages of quicker, more timely harvesting.

Every arable farmer has had  trouble moving machinery between fields and farms during harvest, with negotiating tight corners and gateways a regular issue, he says.

For some, that translates into delays to work; for others it may restrict the size of machines they can use, and that can translate into reduced harvesting speeds and raise costs.

But many are easing the problems by using four-wheel steer trailers to move combine headers either behind the combine itself, or with a tractor.

Those selling the trailers are impressed with their manoeuvrability. Tom Hubbard, from Abrey’s dealer Haynes, says: “If you can get a tractor through the gate then you can get this trailer through too because it follows so accurately.

“I was preparing to demonstrate one to a farmer, and he was nervous that we could not get a combine towing a header around one corner on his farm. But the header followed beautifully and we got round with no trouble.”

Having worked with other trailer makes and not rated them highly, he says the Ziegler proved itself immediately.

“I am impressed with the build quality and simplicity; it is very easy to use. Loading/unloading the header is simple because the locating pins have a degree of play in them, and the header sits very securely on the trailer.

“The machine is designed for the job. By contrast, some of the others trailers I have looked at seemed more like afterthoughts.”

The ease with which they travel on the road is highlighted by Sam Body, demonstrator for Tuckwells at Great Dunmow, who has covered many miles with them. “Last year we took a 35 foot model all over East Anglia without any problems accessing fields.

“It travels easily behind either combine or tractor. The tracking is brilliant; you barely have to look in the mirrors. It stays right there behind you all the time, which makes getting in and out of fields very easy. Many farmers are travelling further and further to work fields, and this trailer makes moving the combine and head as easy as it can be”.
