Farmers still waiting for their 2018 basic payments at the end of this month will receive 75% of the amount owed, says the government.

Defra secretary Michael Gove said 97.4% of basic payment scheme claims with a value of £1.68bn had been completed this year. Farmers still waiting for their money at the end of March would be offered a 75% bridging payment in early April, he added.

The government has also committed to making 2018 payments to 95% of countryside stewardship customers by 31 March. Bridging payments of £24-28m will be introduced so no eligible recipient will wait beyond early April to receive the payment, said Mr Gove.

“We also expect to pay 95% of countryside stewardship final payments by the end of July 2019. And in order to bring down processing times, and speed up completion claims by a month, we will move to making full countryside stewardship payments straight away.”

On environmental stewardship, Defra expects to complete 95% of 2017 final payments by the end of July. The Rural Payments Agency has handled some 18,000 agreements since October, with the number falling to 13,000 next year as agreements are moved to countryside stewardship.
