Hundreds of landowners affected by wind farm cables

More than 1000ha of Norfolk farmland could be affected by the installation of underground cables to transmit electricity generated by offshore wind farms.

Some 200 landowners could be faced with complex issues resulting from the proposed cable installations, say lawyers. Local communities could also face local disruption.

Suffolk-based accountants and solicitors Churchgates is offering support and guidance to landowners who will be affected by the forthcoming construction of the offshore wind farms by Dong Energy and Vattenfall.

Although the wind farms are sited offshore, the onshore underground cable installations and electricity substations will affect landowners along two substantial corridors of land as they take power to the national grid.

The proposed cable routes will run from the coastal village of Weybourne in North Norfolk to a substation adjacent to the A140 in South Norfolk, and from Bacton on the Norfolk coast to Necton near Swaffham.

Churchgates solicitor Fraser Paskell and land agent Jane Kenny of Savills have joined forces to address some of the issues associated with underground cables. The two firms report good interest from landowners who attended two seminars to discuss the  installation.

Mr Paskell developed an option agreement which was used for two earlier offshore wind farm projects. He said: “I am confident that our combined pool of knowledge will help landowners understand the issues and encourage them to use our services to negotiate acceptable terms.”
