Pig ventilation under the spotlight

PIG unit ventilation is under the spotlight in a new DVD from BPEX.

The impact of ventilation on pig health, behaviour and performance at every stage of production must not be underestimated, says the DVD. This means problems must be identified sooner rather than later.

Ventilation systems are usually scrutinised when a new building is erected. But they should also be regularly checked and maintained throughout the life of the building – something that is often overlooked.

The DVD explains what an effective pig unit ventilation system should do, how it should be maintained and operated. It includes advice to help producers assess and make informed decisions about their own units.

Key points to consider include:

  • Air flow within buildings and problems where cold air lands
  • The impact of temperature and draughts on pig behaviour
  • Monitoring of building and outside temperatures
  • Whether fans should have louvers over them

Ventilation requirements should be reviewed regularly, especially when building use or stocking level changes, for example when changing to a batch system

Mike Varley, BPEX head of knowledge transfer, said: “Producers often rely on trial and error to tackle the challenge of ventilation on their units. But it is best to seek specialist advice as early as possible.”

Copies of the DVD are available from BPEX regional knowledge transfer managers, by e-mailing kt@bpex.org.uk or by calling 02476 478793.
