Harlow MP Robert Halfon met glasshouse growers at the House of Commons last month to mark National Salad Awareness Day.

Mr Halfon posed with industry mascots Colin Cucumber and Pippa Pepper before meeting representatives from Lea Valley Growers Association and the NFU. The industry employs about 1500 people in the Lea Valley but the Association says the planning system is hampering job creation.

Association secretary Lee Stiles said: “Our members produce up to three-quarters of the UK’s cucumbers and half of the UK’s sweet peppers, and they could grow more if the planning system allowed them to do so.”
