Suffolk-based maltster Muntons has appointed farmer-owned grain co-operative Openfield Agriculture as one of two strategic suppliers of malting barley.

Muntons is a global player in the supply of malts and malted ingredients. The agreement, which extends until 2020, will see Openfield supply about 35,000t of malting barley each year to Muntons’ maltings in Stowmarket.

Mark Worrell, Openfield chief operating officer, said supporting Muntons’ sustainability commitments was central to the agreement. “We have worked closely with Muntons for many years and understand its needs,” he said.

“By augmenting Muntons’ storage capacity with our own facilities we can supply it with a crop of known provenance for the long-term while our farmer members benefit from the confidence that comes with established demand from a large-scale end-user.”

Openfield has a track record in developing supply chains that support its customer’s sustainability ambitions and manage market volatility. These arrangements build efficient supply chains that are resilient and, ultimately, more profitable to the benefit of all involved.

Ethical partner

Muntons is one example of an ethical supply-chain partner that has put practical sustainability at the centre of its business. To Muntons, this means changing its business practices to reduce its environmental impact while maintaining profitability.

Muntons managing director Alan Ridealgh said: “This agreement ensures Muntons provides a secure supply of a high quality product for the long-term. Agreements such as this, are at the heart of Muntons values where we seek success through partnership and collaboration.”
