DSV will preview its new ‘triple-layered’ high performance oilseed rape with sowing to harvest disease protection and yield protection at this month’s Cereals event.

Triple-layered varieties aim to provide growers with much lower input, lower maintenance varieties that are more relevant to farming in the future without the level of fungicides and agronomic interventions currently used, explains the company’s Sarah Hawthorne.

“They will be the first varieties commercially available in the UK to combine multiple characteristics such as RLM7+, TuYV resistance and pod shatter alongside other key agronomic benefits whilst maintaining the highest yields and oil contents possible.”

The triple-layered approach was developed in response to the neonicotinoid ban and move away from high input management. It seeks to use breeding to ensure varieties have as much built-in yield resilience and disease protection as possible to do the job sprays did previously.

Three varieties are going through the UK testing system with the first growers trialling them on farms across the country. They share the same foundation of vigour and yield delivery as Incentive 45 and will sit alongside DSV’s growing portfolio of Clearfield varieties.

Plurax CL and Phoenix CL are proving to be very high yielding imadazolinone resistant oilseed rape varieties following on from DSV’s established Veritas CL, says Ms Hawthorne.

“Clearfield is growing rapidly and our varieties are among the best available. Alongside strong yield stability and oil contents, both Phoenix CL and Plurax CL have good all round disease protection with Plurax CL featuring exceptional verticillium wilt tolerance too.”

A key feature of the stand at Cereals will be a look at how sacrificial crops such as mustard and forage radish can be planted alongside Clearfield varieties to reduce flea beetle pressure in oilseed rape. Other cover crop options will also be featured at the event.

“We have cover crop solutions for all applications now including the complex TerraLife multi-species crop mixtures designed to fulfil specific agronomic and management objectives such as soil structure improvement, nutrient delivery and seedbed preparation.”
