The search is under way for Suffolk’s future farming movers and shakers – with prizes worth £800 for the winner.

Suffolk’s Rising Star Scholarship Award is being organised by the Suffolk Agricultural Association. It’s open to young persons aged from 19 to 30 year old who are working in agriculture or the allied industries.

The award recognises youngsters in the early stages of their chosen career but already starting to stand out. They will live and work in Suffolk, be actively involved in the sector, be endorsed by their employer and involved in projects or initiatives at their work place.

Proactive people

These proactive people could already be introducing new ideas to the businesses in which they work. This might be through the introduction of new technology, different working practices or just the ability to look afresh at ways to tackle an everyday issue.

They will have a passion about promoting a proper understanding about food and farming to the next generation, perhaps they get involved in the School Farm and Country Fair, the Food and Farming Student Day or an educational event at a local show or school.

An £800 package of prizes for the winner comprises a place at next year’s Oxford Farming Conference ((7-9 January 2020), one year’s membership of the Suffolk Agricultural Association and a year’s subscription to the under 30’s Farmers’ Club.

The winner will also receive two tickets to the Suffolk Agricultural Association  Awards Dinner on Thursday 17 October 2019, explained association chief executive Philip Ainsworth.

“We have looked at recognising younger people who have established themselves in our industry but are still at an early stage of their careers,” he said. “These people will hopefully become the leaders of the future and inspire others into a career in agriculture.

“The Rising Star Scholarship Award aims to give the recipient a valuable set of opportunities that enables them to develop new networks and access to high quality knowledge and learning during the year of the award.

“We hope the award will be one of great personal value and help to show to others what young people can achieve’’.

The closing date for entries is 12 April 2019. For full details, visit www.bit.ly/SuffolkRisingStar
